Clean Water Initiatives
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a critical factor in improving health, education, and economic well-being. At Literacy And Water Movement, our Clean Water Initiative focuses on providing sustainable water solutions to underserved communities
What We’re Doing to provide clean water
By installing boreholes, constructing water wells, and promoting rainwater harvesting systems, we aim to ensure that every community we serve has access to clean and safe water.
Our Clean Water Solutions
Borehole Installation
Our volunteers install deep boreholes, which tap into underground water sources to provide a reliable and sustainable supply of clean water. Boreholes are essential in areas where water scarcity is a severe issue, and they provide an uninterrupted source of water for daily use and agricultural activities.
- Reliable Water Source: Boreholes offer a sustainable solution to water shortages, ensuring that communities have a consistent supply of clean water for drinking, cooking, and farming.
- Supporting Schools and Communities: We distribute water from the boreholes to school kitchens, dormitories, storage facilities, and community water points, providing access to 700 students and over 4,700 community members in places like ACK Mtito-Andei.
Water Well Construction
In areas where underground water is more accessible, we construct water wells to serve as localized water sources. These wells allow communities to easily access clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, reducing the need for long, exhausting walks to distant water sources.
- Localized Access: Wells bring water closer to communities, making it easier for families to collect clean water and reducing the burden on women and children who often walk long distances to fetch water.
- Impact: Our wells improve the health and quality of life for thousands of individuals, ensuring that clean water is available right where it is needed.
Rainwater Harvesting Systems
Recognizing rainwater as a valuable resource, we implement rainwater harvesting systems in communities with frequent rainfall. These systems capture and store rainwater runoff from rooftops and other surfaces, providing an additional source of clean water for households and schools.
- Sustainable Water Use: Rainwater harvesting helps supplement other water sources and ensures communities have access to clean water during dry seasons or when other sources are unavailable.
- Environmental Impact: By utilizing rainwater, we help communities become more self-reliant and reduce their dependence on other water sources, promoting environmental sustainability
Our Impact
Through our Clean Water Initiative, we have significantly improved the lives of thousands of individuals across Kenya. One of our most impactful projects is at ACK Mtito-Andei, where our borehole installation provides clean water to:
- 700 students and their school facilities.
- 4,763 community members, ensuring that families have access to affordable water.
- Vegetable Gardens: The water is also used to plant vegetable gardens, improving nutrition in the community.
- Wildlife: Water troughs provide clean water to wild animals, ensuring harmony between the community and local wildlife.
Impact in Numbers:
- 700 students served by our borehole project.
- 4,763 community members benefiting from clean water access.
- Multiple wells and rainwater harvesting systems installed across various communities.
